Description
Zopiclone is a hypnotic agent that belongs to the cyclopyrrolone compounds. It rapidly induces and maintains sleep without reducing total REM sleep and preserving slow-wave sleep. Negligible residual effects are observed the next morning. Its pharmacological properties include hypnotic, sedative, anxiolytic, anticonvulsant and myorelaxant actions. These are related to its high affinity and specific agonist effect on central receptors belonging to the macromolecular complex modulating the opening of chloride channels. However, zopiclone and other cyclopyrrolones have been shown to act at a different site than benzodiazepines, including different conformational changes in the receptor complex.
