Description
Thyroxine is a thyroid hormone that is formed by the condensation of two molecules of the amino acid tyrosine. Also called T4 hormone for tetraiodothyronine, the thyroxine molecule contains four iodine atoms and has a structure close to that of another thyroid hormone: triiodothyronine or T3, which has three iodine atoms. Thyroxine is produced by the thyroid follicles. Thyroid hormones act on a large number of organs.
