Sibutramine which is the molecule of Reductil (usually in the form of hydrochloride salt monohydrate) is an oral appetite suppressant. Until recently, it was marketed and prescribed as an adjunct in the treatment of exogenous and obesity.
Sibutramine is a drug produced since 1997 and used as adjunctive treatment for nutritional obesity. It is a phenylethylamine appetite suppressant which causes changes in brain amines resulting in decreased appetite and a feeling of fullness.
Sibutramine works by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine. But, unlike Fenfluramine and its derivatives, it does not increase the level of circulating serotonin and therefore would not have the cardiac side effects of the latter. It increases the feeling of satiety and therefore decreases food intake. Sibutramine is particularly effective, it acts from the start of the cycle (after 2/3 days only).
It is not recommended to exceed 12 months of treatment and to use Sibutramine if you have a history of cardiovascular disease.
