Menotropin is used to help your body produce multiple eggs during ovulation for in vitro fertilization. It is a fertility drug that is injected subcutaneously or intramuscularly. As a combination drug, menotropins bind to the follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) receptor, causing ovulation in the absence of sufficient endogenous luteinizing hormone (LH). They also bind to the LH receptor, stimulating the release of the appropriate hormone. The drug contains both FSH and LH, thus it induces the growth and development of ovarian follicles as well as the production of gonadal steroids in women who do not have ovarian failure. FSH is the primary driver of follicular recruitment and growth during early folliculogenesis, while LH is important for ovarian steroidogenesis and mediates physiological events leading to the development of a competent preovulatory follicle.
