FSH and LH play an important role in the development of follicles (eggs) produced by the ovaries in women. Menotropin is used to help your body produce multiple eggs during ovulation for in vitro fertilization (IVF). It is a fertility medication administered by subcutaneous or intramuscular injection. As a combination medication, menotropins bind to the follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) receptor, triggering ovulation when there is insufficient endogenous luteinizing hormone (LH). They also bind to the LH receptor, stimulating the release of the appropriate hormone. The medication contains both FSH and LH, thus inducing the growth and development of ovarian follicles and the production of gonadal steroids in women who do not have ovarian insufficiency. FSH is the primary driver of follicular recruitment and growth in early folliculogenesis, while LH is important for ovarian steroidogenesis and is involved in the physiological events leading to the development of a competent preovulatory follicle.
